West Bengal RG Kar protest:

Junior doctors finally called off the hunger strike after 17 days. Junior doctors also called off the strike which was called in all hospitals in the state today. Yesterday evening, the protesting junior doctors met state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with their demands.

Earlier, Mamata Banerjee requested the agitating junior doctors to call off their indefinite hunger strike and come to talks. Doctors entered the 17th day of their hunger strike on Monday demanding justice in the RG Kar case. On Saturday, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri Mamata Banerjee, spoke to the doctors. He sought 3-4 months to settle the demand arising out of the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital there.

Taking this discussion proposal forward, Chief Secretary Manoj Pant invited the protesting doctors for around 45 minutes of talks with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from 5 pm on Monday at the State Secretariat Nabanna on the condition of withdrawing the hunger strike on Saturday evening. In response to this, the agitating doctors said that the hunger strike would not be ended until all their demands were met, but they agreed to hold a meeting yesterday, Monday.

CM again wants 3-4 months to fulfill the demand of RG Kar's case:

This comes nearly two months after the protesting doctors yesterday set a deadline of October 21 for the state government to meet their demands. The junior doctors have threatened to go on another statewide strike if their demands are not met.

RG Kar

Last Saturday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called upon the protesting junior doctors to call off their hunger strike over the RG Kar case and join their work. Everyone has the right to protest, but healthcare services should not be affected as a result of the protest. I am requesting the Chief Minister of this state to call off the fast. Most of your demands have been fulfilled, give me another 3-4 months to fulfill the rest.

When will the RG Kar deadlock end?

The junior doctors started a strike on August 9 following the rape and murder of a colleague at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital, which started again on October 5 after a nearly 50-day strike in two phases.

The protesting doctors have been demanding a safe working environment to avoid a tragedy like that of their murdered colleagues. Out of the eight doctors on the hunger strike, six have been hospitalized so far since their health is getting worse. And the other 8 persons, intend to stay there indefinitely.

Junior doctors on hunger strike with Aniket Mahato in Kolkata – Snigdha Hazra, Tanaya Panja and Anustup Mukherjee from Calcutta Medical College, Arnab Mukherjee from SSKM Hospital, Pulastha Acharya from NRS Medical College and Hospital and KPC Medical College’s Sayantani Ghosh Hazra. One of the RG Kar protests, including one from Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishtan and one from Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital Alolika Ghoru, took the total number of doctors on indefinite hunger strike across the state to 10, including two from North Bengal Medical College.
