Kojagiri Purnima: Important Rituals and When to Observe Kojagari Lakshmi Puja

This year, 2024 Kojagiri purnima will be observed on October 16, the full moon tithi of Ashwin month. On this day all people worship Ma Lakshi. On this day everyone prays to Goddess Lakshmi for their happiness and abundance. On this day, many devotees fast to their mothers to fulfill their wishes. Especially this day is celebrated in every Bengali’s house. Apart from this, this puja is also seen in the states of Odisha, Maharashtra, and Assam.

The Significance of Kojagari Lakshmi Puja

Maa Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth. Puja of Maa Lakshmi is done in every house. But every year Maa Lakshmi Puja is held on a special day “Kojagiri Purnima Tithi”. This day is the appearance day of Maa Lakshmi. According to mythology, on this day Goddess Lakshmi appears on earth to fulfill the desires of her devotees. So this day is one of the days of worship of Maa Lakshmi.

According to mythology, paddy is a symbol of Goddess Lakshmi. Cereals, rice and rice are symbols of Maa Lakshmi. Therefore, Goddess Lakshmi never shows mercy to those who waste food grains. The owl is the vehicle of Mother Lakshmi. Golaghar is also a symbol of Maa Lakshmi where food grains are stored, which is usually seen in rural areas.

Among all Hindu deities, Maa Lakshmi bestows luxury, money, wealth, and happiness on her devotees. So all people perform Lakshmi Puja on this day to get the blessings of Maa Lakshmi. This Kojagiri Lakshmi Purnima is known as Sharad Purnima in North India.

In Bengal, every Bengali celebrates this day with great fervor. This puja is performed especially in the evening or at midnight. So on this day, everyone decorates their house very nicely. Devotees chant and pray to Maa Lakshmi at night on this day and recite several mantras and chants to please Goddess Lakshmi.

The activities of Kojagari Lakshmi Puja

The ceremony varies from region to region, but in most places, on this day all the devotees start the puja collection by taking a holy bath early in the morning. Then Goddess Lakshmi’s idol or photo is beautifully arranged on a wooden throne. On this day various seasonal fruits, sweets, Nadu, moa, and many other bhajis are offered as Prasad to Maa Lakshmi. The whole house is illuminated with lamps. Khichuri bhog, coconut water, and sesame seeds are very favorite bhog of Mother Lakshmi. Before the puja, Maa Lakshmi is decorated with flowers, vermilion, branches – bangles and beautiful clothes.

 

Devotees decorate their houses with colors and different coloring lights on this day. Devotees invoke Maa Lakshmi by chanting certain mantras during puja on this day. And then Kojagiri narrates the story of Purnima. At the end of the puja, devotees break their fast by eating the puja prasad and then eating the vegetarian  hearty meal.

Enjoyment of Lakshmi Puja

The main delicacies of Kojagari Lakshmi Puja are Khichuri and Labra. Mixed vegetable curry with khichuri is offered to Maa Lakshmi on this day. Luchi, pies, semolina, kheer, various sweets are also provided. Apart from khichuri bhog, Maa Lakshmi’s favorite are coconut nadu, sesame nadu, moya etc. Along with this indulgence various seasonal fruits are offered as Prasadi to Maa Lakshmi. As per West Bengal custom, whole vegetarian food is consumed on this day and no rice is cooked. Again according to the East Bengal tradition, Panchpada of fish is cooked on this day.
