Dhanteras – October 30, 2024

The festival of Diwali begins with Dhanteras, which is dedicated to wealth and prosperity. People get ready for Diwali by cleaning and decorating their houses and places of business. Traditionally, on this day people buy new things, especially gold, and silver, as this day is considered an auspicious time to buy them.

On this day everyone worships Lord Dhanvantari, the god of health and medicine, and prays for good health. Houses are cleaned and decorated with rangoli (colorful designs made on the floor) and lit with oil lamps (diyas).

Significance:

Dhanteras marks the beginning of Diwali and dictates the importance of wealth and good health for a prosperous life. On this day everyone buys new things in gold and silver. And also prays to Lord Dhanvantari for good health and Goddess Lakshmi for wealth.

Naraka Chaturdashi – October 30, 2024

It is the second day of the Diwali festival, known as Norka Chaturdashi or Little Diwali. This day is commemorated as Lord Krishna’s victory over Narakasura. This day symbolizes the removal of evil and negativity from our lives.

Rituals:

On this day everyone wakes up early, takes a holy oil bath, and wears new clothes. Special prayers are offered to God. Houses are illuminated with lamps (diya) to dispel darkness. In the evening everyone is celebrated together with sweets and light fireworks.

Significance:

This day reminds everyone to remove darkness from their hearts and homes and bring in positivity and light.

Lakshmi Puja (main Diwali) – October 31, 2024

Diwali’s third day is the most significant. Devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi on that day for wealth, good fortune, and prosperity. This is the main day of Diwali, celebrated with great festivity across India.

On this day, houses and temples are lit with oil lamps in the evening, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness. Everyone performs Lakshmi Puja, and all family members pray to Goddess Lakshmi.

Govardhan Puja - November 1, 2024

On the fourth day of Diwali, Govardhan Puja is performed, celebrated to honor Lord Krishna. According to the mythology, Lord Sri Krishna raised Govardhan Hill to protect the villagers from the storm sent by Lord Indra, the god of rain.

On this day, everyone makes a special offering, called Annakuta (Mountain of Food) to Lord Sri Krishna. In some regions, small clay images of Govardhana Hill are made and worshipped.

Bhai Dooj - November 3, 2024

Bhai Dooj is the last day of the Diwali festival. This day is celebrated as a festival of bonding between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters pray for their brothers’ well-being and success, and in return, brothers give gifts and promises to protect their sisters.

On this day sisters apply tilak (mark of protection) on the forehead of their brothers and then perform aarti (prayer ceremony) with oil lamps. The brothers give them gifts as a token of love and promise to take care of their sisters.
