Cyclone Dana Disrupts Travel: 178 Trains Canceled, Schools Closed

Cyclone Dana is nearing onset over Odisha and West Bengal, likely to make landfall at Puri in Odisha and Sagar Island in West Bengal between Thursday night and Friday. Both these states have begun evacuating people from areas likely to be affected by the cyclone.

Cyclone "Dana" :

According to the Meteorological Department, the deep depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclonic wing around 5.30 am on Wednesday, centered about 560 km from Odisha’s Paradip and 630 km from Sagar Island. It is expected to develop into a severe cyclonic storm, which may hit the Odisha-West Bengal coastline as early as October 25.

This depression will develop into a severe cyclone by next Thursday morning. and is likely to pass over the Puri and Sagar islands between Thursday night and Friday morning. Wind speed is likely to be around 100-120 km per hour during this time. IMD Director General “Mrityunjay Mohapatra” said that Odisha is likely to be the worst affected by the impact of this cyclone. On behalf of Odisha, the West Bengal government, the Coast Guard, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and other rescue teams are on high alert.

Train services disrupted due to Cyclone "Dana":

As Cyclone Dana draws near, East Coast Railway (ECOR) has canceled 178 trains in total, including 85 UP trains and 93 down trains. This cyclone is expected to hit Odisha on October 24 night or early October 25. Because of this, ECoR has informed in a notification that some train services will remain suspended for three days from October 23 to October 25.

In preparation for the cyclone, ECoR has set up a 24/7 disaster management cell at its headquarters at Rail Sadan and divisional offices at Khurda Road, Visakhapatnam, and Sambalpur. These teams are responsible for ensuring the speedy restoration of train services and rail infrastructure in case of cyclone-related disruptions.

The school was closed due to the impact of the cyclone

In West Bengal and Odisha’s coastal regions, all schools have been closed. The West Bengal School Education Department has issued a notice to suspend all academic activities in seven districts including South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Bankura, Hooghly, Jhargram, Kolkata, and Howrah from October 23 to October 26.

Cyclone Dana Update: The evacuation process is now underway

The impact of Cyclone “Dana” is feared to be severe, prompting evacuations from coastal districts. Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said more than 5,000 relief centers are being set up. Preparations are being made to evacuate nearly 1 million residents from at-risk areas.

According to Mr. Suresh Pujari, over 5,000 relief centers have been established so far, equipped with all the amenities needed to offer food, drink, milk for kids, and medication for the ill.

Districts affected by Cyclone "Danar" :

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), several districts of West Bengal and Odisha are likely to face severe damage. Fourteen districts of Odisha are expected to be worst affected by cyclone Dana, including Angul, Puri, Nayagarh, Khordha, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Ganjam and Mayurbhanj.

Similarly in West Bengal, the most vulnerable areas include South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, and East Midnapore. The cyclone is also likely to affect coastal areas including West Midnapore, Bankura, Jhargram, and Hooghly.

20 NDRF teams are on standby in Odisha and 14 teams in West Bengal, as Cyclone Dana is expected to make landfall at Puri in Odisha and Sagar Dwip in Bengal on Thursday evening. High-risk locations have already seen the deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams. Control rooms have been set up in states and districts to conduct these rescue and relief operations properly.
